Science 9 is a learner-centered and inquiry-based course designed to develop scientific literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, and responsible decision-making among Grade 9 learners in accordance with the DepEd MATATAG Curriculum. The course emphasizes the understanding of fundamental scientific concepts and processes through experiential learning, investigation, collaboration, and real-life application.
The course focuses on the interaction of matter, energy, life, and the Earth’s systems, enabling learners to explain natural phenomena and appreciate the relevance of science in everyday life and in addressing community and environmental concerns. Learners engage in scientific investigations that promote evidence-based reasoning, creativity, innovation, and ethical use of science and technology.
Content Areas
The course is organized into four major domains:
Earth and Space Science – understanding Earth’s internal and external processes, the formation and shaping of Earth’s surface, and the effects of geologic activities on people and the environment.
Physical Science – investigating motion, forces, energy transfer, electricity, and other interactions that govern physical phenomena.
Life Science – examining the structure and function of living organisms, heredity, ecosystems, and the interdependence of organisms and their environment.
Scientific Inquiry and Process Skills – developing skills in observing, classifying, measuring, experimenting, analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and communicating scientific information effectively.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, learners are expected to:
Demonstrate understanding of key concepts in Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science;
Apply scientific knowledge and inquiry skills in investigating problems and explaining natural events;
Analyze the impact of human activities on the environment and propose sustainable solutions;
Use evidence, models, and scientific reasoning in making informed decisions;
Communicate scientific ideas clearly through oral, written, graphical, and digital formats; and
Manifest curiosity, objectivity, collaboration, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility as scientifically literate Filipino learners.
MATATAG Alignment
This course supports the goals of the MATATAG Curriculum by:
strengthening foundational scientific understanding;
reducing curriculum congestion to allow deeper mastery of essential competencies;
promoting active and meaningful learning experiences;
integrating 21st-century skills, values formation, and contextualized learning; and
preparing learners to become critical, resilient, and responsible citizens who can contribute to national development and sustainable communities.
Assessment
Learners are assessed using a variety of formative and summative assessments, including:
written tests and quizzes,
laboratory and investigation activities,
performance tasks,
research and project-based outputs,
collaborative activities,
reflective journals, and
presentations and demonstrations.
Assessment is anchored on the MATATAG principle of evaluating not only content knowledge but also scientific processes, understanding, application, and values demonstrated by the learners.

The course utilizes inquiry-based, collaborative, contextualized, and differentiated instruction. Learning experiences encourage learners to explore scientific questions, conduct investigations, use appropriate technologies and laboratory tools, and connect scientific concepts to health, safety, environmental conservation, disaster preparedness, and sustainable living in the Philippine context.
